Lately at work we’ve been converting almost everything to use Kerberos authentication. This allows machines that are logged into our Active Directory domain to automatically login to various web resources. This seems to work fine on Mac OS with Safari with zero config. Firefox takes a config change but Google Chrome has been a huge problem child. Luckily this has been fixed in recent versions of Chrome to allow us to set the settings via “defaults write”. There was a shoddy hack being described some time ago that you could load up Workgroup Manager and set the Chrome policy there, but the More >
Settle in, grab a drink. This is a lengthy post.
Several weeks ago I made a decision to remove myself from Facebook. I toyed with the idea of deleting my account entirely but I hesitated. I then decided that such a hesitation is probably my gut telling me something so I decided to deactivate instead. I’m glad I listened to my gut for once before it was too late. After some serious introspection and a few conversations with some friends I have decided to activate my account with a few stipulations.
First, if you are reading this here instead of on Facebook then it’s because I felt no need to More >
As things go, my wife’s line was available to upgrade to a newer iPhone. We decided to try a new upgrade path and sell the phone through Gazelle instead of messing with eBay this time around. We have never used Gazelle before so it was a bit of a risk. Looking around on their site, they were listed with the BBB and had a rating of an A+. Seems legit, went to their site and got a quote for the iPhone 4 we were interested in selling. The price seemed a little lower than eBay but we decided it was fair enough and went forward with the sale. Gazelle sent us a box, I set the phone back More >
For years I have always wanted to do without a cable tv or satellite provider. This dream began years ago in 2003 when I found MythTV. It was able to capture over-the-air (rabbit ears) channels as well as cable channels if you had cable tv. The best part was that it could record shows and save them. It was really the first DVR besides TiVo. Even better was that I could download shows and movies online and save them to MythTV. It was so close to what I wanted, but just not quite there. This was also limited to viewing on a single TV, I couldn’t easily copy the shows to a laptop More >
It’s half there! Our equipment is ready in the cabinet and feed-line is on the tower. The side-arm is on the tower and ready as well. We will be installing the antenna and terminating the feed-line this weekend. Once that is done the W0FZY-1 will be in full production!
One of my biggest frustrations with Google+ lately comes after the big G decided to combine Google+ circles with your Google Chat buddy list. All of a sudden I have 100+ people in my buddy list and I do not need that many people showing up to chat all the time. I think I have finally discovered a solution though!
Open Google+ and edit your circles. In my case I decided that I only want to see people from my “Friends” and “Family” circles to show up in Google Chat. I moved everyone else from my Friends circle that I didn’t want in Google Chat into an “Also Friends” circle.

After several irritated attempts to use one product/software/hack after another, I have finally found something that fits. I have tried uShare, Media Tomb, hacked up python scripts, Wine with various stuff, Amahi and fuppes. Nothing seems to serve media to the Xbox 360 without some stupid problem. Half of the serving programs out there don’t support transcoding. Others support DLNA but not the weird requirements the Xbox 360 has for folder structure. It’s completely irritating trying to find something. Finally, I’ve stumbled pretty much on accident upon Twonky Media Server. Yes, it’s $20, but More >
